Looking for a peaceful escape from the buzz of Tokyo? Just under two hours from Ikebukuro by train, Chichibu offers mountains, rivers, hot springs—and some surprisingly good ramen. Whether you’re craving an overnight retreat or a slower-paced 2-night adventure, this hidden gem in Saitama has everything: local food, scenic views, cozy stays, and plenty of soul-warming bowls of ramen. As a local, I’m excited to share this perfect itinerary with you.
Why Chichibu?
Chichibu is a small mountain city in Saitama Prefecture, just under two hours from central Tokyo. It’s known for its beautiful natural scenery, relaxing hot springs, and even a bit of anime fame (Anohana, anyone?). But what many travelers don’t realize is that Chichibu also has some incredible local ramen. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway with delicious food and local charm, this is it.

How to Get to Chichibu from Tokyo (Ikebukuro)
The easiest way to reach Chichibu is by taking the Seibu Limited Express “Laview” from Ikebukuro Station in Tokyo. This direct train takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes and goes straight to Seibu-Chichibu Station. Tickets cost around ¥1,500 one way, and seat reservations are required. The Laview is super comfortable, with huge windows and a sleek, modern design. The ride itself is a relaxing part of the journey. Once you arrive, most ramen shops and scenic spots are just a short walk or bus ride away.
Now that you know how to get there, let’s talk about the real reason I visit Chichibu so often — the ramen.
You might not expect a small countryside town to have great ramen, but trust me, Chichibu has some serious hidden gems.

🛌 Recommended Stays in Chichibu
Tomodachi house
If you’re planning to stay overnight in Chichibu, I highly recommend this cozy guesthouse run by my local friend. It’s located in a quiet area, surrounded by nature, and perfect for a relaxing escape.
The host is super friendly and speaks English, so it’s a great option for international travelers too.
One special feature of this stay is the chance to sleep in a traditional tatami room. It is something that has become harder to find, even in Japan, and offers a peaceful and memorable experience.
